Suffolk police say that road rage resulted in an altercation Saturday night that left one man dead and another hospitalized at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Chad Andrew Kinney, 36, of Carrollton, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and other felonies following the shooting at about 9 p.m. Saturday.
Police reported that Kinney and 42-year-old Glenn Joe Bauwens of Suffolk were involved in “some passing or cutting off or some type of driver actions that caused the drivers to become upset” along Eclipse Road prior to the incident, according to Suffolk spokesperson Debbie George.
The men pulled off the road at the cemetery in Eclipse, where Bauwens and a passenger in his car, 29-year-old Dennis W. Bailey, also of Suffolk, got out of their vehicle and approached Kinney in his vehicle, the investigation revealed.
Police say words were exchanged, and Kinney shot both men from inside his vehicle. Neither of the victims was armed at the time of the shooting.
Two female passengers in Bauwens’ vehicle remained in that vehicle throughout the incident and were unharmed, George said on Monday.
Police received a 911 call from a neighbor and spoke to Kinney on the telephone during that conversation, and he told them he had shot the two men, George said.
Kinney was arrested at the scene, and police found the weapon used in the shooting behind a tree.
Kinney remains in custody at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail and has been charged with second-degree murder, malicious wounding, use or display of a firearm in committing a felony and shooting from a vehicle so as to endanger persons.
Both shooting victims were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where Bauwens was later pronounced dead. Bailey was listed in good condition Monday evening.
