A 20-year-old Suffolk man remained in the Hampton City Jail on Tuesday, charged with murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Deshawn Travis Goodwin-Godfrey, of the 400 block of Spruce Street, was arrested late Monday night, almost 24 hours after a shooting at a home in Hampton claimed the life of a 28-year-old Newport News man.
Hampton police received several 911 calls notifying them that a man had been shot just after midnight on Sunday outside a home on Mitchell Road in Hampton, according to Cpl. Allison Quiñones, spokesperson for the police department.
An investigation revealed that several people were in the backyard of the home, when they got into a physical altercation. At some point during the fight, police contend, Goodwin-Godfrey pulled out a handgun and shot the victim.
The victim, Julius Omar Bartley of Newport News, was transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 3:01 a.m. Sunday.
