Builder earns Player of Week honor

Newport News Apprentice School senior Eric Joe (Nansemond River) was named the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association) Division I Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 23.
Joe averaged 20 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in three games during the week for the Builders. For the season, Joe, a 6-foot-1 guard/forward, is averaging 15.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
Earlier this season, Joe surpassed 1,000 points in his Builder career. Currently with 1,101 career points, Joe is fifth all-time in scoring in Apprentice basketball history.
Also on Apprentice’s team is freshman Chris Hearn (King’s Fork). Hearn’s averaging 7.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per game in 14 games played. The Builders are 9-10 overall.
Mount Olive’s women’s basketball team won conference games on Saturday and Monday, winning 59-58 at Lees-McRae Saturday and winning 73-59 at Converse on Monday.
Freshman guard Andrea Jones (Nansemond River) had nine points on three three-point baskets against Lees-McRae and 11 points, again with three three-pointers, against Converse. Jones is averaging 8.1 points per game and has made 27-of-79 (34.2 percent) of her three-point shots.
Mount Olive is 8-8 overall and 7-5 in the Carolinas Conference.
Elizabeth City State defeated Fayetteville State 82-58 Monday in a CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) men’s basketball contest. Sophomore Marquie Cooke (Nansemond River) had 19 points on 8-of-10 field-goal shooting, along with five steals and four assists, for ECSU (10-8, 5-7).
Cooke is averaging 12.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. The Vikings play at Bowie St. Thursday evening and will host Virginia Union Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Washington and Lee junior Brandon Wilder (Nansemond-Suffolk) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.06 on Saturday in Washington, D.C. as the Generals defeated Catholic and Marymount in a three-team swim meet. Wilder also swam in the 100 butterfly and 400 freestyle relay for the Generals. Washington and Lee is 8-3.
