No. 11-seed Old Dominion trailed most of the game but took the lead late for a 51-50 win over No. 6 Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Thursday afternoon in New Orleans.

It’s the first NCAA Tournament win for the Monarchs (27-8) since, as a No. 14 seed, ODU defeated No. 3 Villanova in the 1995 tournament.

Chesapeake native Frank Hassell (Indian River) led the Monarchs with 15 points and nine rebounds. Freshman forward Nick Wright (Nansemond River) played briefly as a sub in the second half.

ODU advances to play No. 3-seed Baylor Saturday. Baylor beat No. 14 Sam Houston St. 68-59 Thursday.

Winthrop’s men’s basketball team had its season come to a close Tuesday in the opening game of the NCAA Tournament. Arkansas-Pine Bluff defeated the Eagles 61-44 in Dayton, Ohio.

Sophomore guard Andre Jones (Nansemond River) played 14 minutes off the bench for the Eagles, finishing with two points and two assists.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff outscored Winthrop 37-21 in the second half. Winthrop finishes the year with a 19-14 record.

Freshman Jaquon Parker (King’s Fork) started at guard for Cincinnati Wednesday night in its first round NIT game against visiting Weber State. The Bearcats advanced with a 76-62 victory. Parker totaled six points, five boards and two assists.

Cincinnati (19-15) will host Dayton in the second round Monday night.

William and Mary sophomore pitcher Matt Davenport (Nansemond-Suffolk) earned the victory on the hill in W&M’s 5-2 win over Maryland Wednesday in Williamsburg.

Davenport held the Terrapins scoreless for the last 5.2 innings, allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out five. Davenport improved to 3-0.

Davenport was the CAA Pitcher of the Week last week after holding North Carolina and Quinnipiac scoreless over eight innings combined.

The Tribe (10-6) hosts a three-game series against Massachusetts Friday through Sunday.

Virginia Wesleyan freshman Jeremy Hagwood (Lakeland) made his first collegiate pitching appearance on March 10.

Hagwood pitched 3.0 innings in relief and earned the win in Va. Wesleyan’s 7-5 victory over Post. Hagwood allowed three hits and one earned run while striking out two. The Marlins are 9-7 overall and 3-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Senior Tyren Rivers (Nansemond River) went 3-for-5 with two runs, a walk and a stolen base in Radford’s 9-2 win at North Carolina A&T Wednesday. The Highlanders (7-7) have a four-game winning streak.

Rivers, Radford’s centerfielder and lead-off hitter, is hitting .306 with 12 runs, seven doubles and seven stolen bases on the season.

Randolph sophomore Leigh Sexton (King’s Fork) is hitting .424 with 14 runs, four homers, 26 RBI and a .932 fielding percentage as Randolph’s shortstop. The home run and RBI numbers are team-highs. The WildCats are 8-10 overall and 0-2 in the ODAC.

Mount Olive’s softball team swept Conference Carolinas opponent St. Andrew’s by back-to-back 6-0 scores Wednesday.

Sophomore Sarah Saunders (Lakeland) pitched the last two innings of a one-hitter in the second game of the doubleheader. Saunders allowed one walk and no hits to finish the game.

Mount Olive is 10-15 overall and 2-0 in conference.
