Western Branch scored four runs before visiting Nansemond River recorded an out Monday evening in what wound up being a 10-0, six-inning win for the Bruins.

After pitching four shutout innings in Nansemond River’s opening 10-0 win over King’s Fork last Tuesday, Reid Hoffler couldn’t make it out of the first inning against the Bruins.

It was mostly wildness rather than Western Branch knocking Hoffler out. By the time the Warriors got an out, there had been two wild pitches, a passed ball, two walks and two hit batters. Ty Brown came on in relief and got the last two outs of the inning, but WB led 6-0 by that time.

Western Branch tacked on two more runs in the second. Brown held the Bruins scoreless for the next three innings, but NR’s offense managed only three hits on the day.

Even when the Warriors put guys on base, things went poorly. Runners were picked off first in the first and third innings.

In the second, Kevin Miller singled into centerfield and on the Bruin outfielder’s dive to make the catch, Miller thought the ball had bounded by the centerfielder. Instead the outfielder trapped the ball under him and quickly fired the ball back into the infield. Miller was caught too far off first and picked off trying to get back to the bag.

Nansemond River (1-1, 1-1) plays at Oscar Smith Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
