Joyce Artis

Joyce Ann Artis, a long-time resident of Washington, D.C. and formerly of Suffolk, passed away on March 18 after a lengthy illness. She was born in Suffolk on July 23, 1948. She was the daughter of the late Herbert Randolph Artis and Lillian Mayfield Artis. She was the granddaughter of the late Sylvia Mayfield, who raised her from the time she was a young girl.
Joyce was formerly a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Suffolk and later became a member of Holy Temple Church of Christ in Washington, D.C. She was educated in the Suffolk Public School System and was a 1966 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School.
Joyce began her work career in 1968 at the United States Postal service, where she rose from the position of postal clerk to supervisor. She retired on disability in 1999.
Left to cherish her memory are a devoted daughter, Sebrina Artis Miller of Upper Marlboro, Md.; a devoted son, Roger J. Redd, II of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, David Harrell of West Haven, Conn. and Jerry Artis of Oxon Hill, Md.; two sisters, Carol Artis of Washington, D.C. and Sherry Artis Franklin (Terron) of Suitland, Md.; two aunts — Rosemary Bess of Hamden, Conn. and Alma Mayfield of Hampton; loving friend and second mother, Essie M. DeLoatch of Suffolk and very special friends and caregivers, Faith Beamon, Sandra Everett, Frank Jones and Mildred Kilgore.
Funeral services will be held on March 24 at 10 a.m. at Holy Temple Church of Christ, 439 12th Street SE, Washington, DC 20003.
Arrangements are being handled by Marshall’s Funeral Home, 4308 Suitland Road, Suitland, MD 20746.
The family is receiving friends at 5102 Sly Fox Court, Upper Marlboro, MD.
