Bernice Blowe Elam, of Zuni, Va., departed this life on March 24, 2010 at Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital, Norfolk, Va.
She was born in Southampton County, Va. to the late Holly Ricks Blowe and Easter Blowe. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Shelia E. Lawrence; a brother, Jasper Blowe; and sisters, Fannye B. Eley and Lorraine B. Rountree.
She leaves to cherish her memories, a loving and devoted husband of 51 years, the Rev. James T. Elam Sr.; one son, the Rev. James T. Elam Jr. (Rose), of Hampton, Va.; two sisters, Irene B. Littlejohn and Roberta B. Wilson, of Suffolk, Va.; two grandchildren, James T. Elam III and Joshua M. Elam, of Hampton, Va.; son-in-law, Gregory A. Lawrence, of Suffolk; sisters-in-law, Catherine E. Butler and Florence L. Brown; brothers-in-law, Wesley Elam (Sylvia), Frank Elam, Matthew Elam (Brenda), George E. Eley Sr. and William Rountree; a godchild, MaShonda Joyner; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She has been a member of Shiloh Baptist Church since early childhood. Sister Elam held the position as an inspiring First Lady and served in the following ministries: Senior Choir, Deaconess Ministry, Sunday School Ministry, Gospel Choir Advisor, Missionary Ministry and Christian Support Ministry. She was a loving, devoted, faithful and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to all.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, March 28, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church, 9000 Firetower Road, Windsor, Va. Eulogy will be rendered by Pastor James T. Elam Sr. and Pastor James T. Elam Jr. Interment will be in Shiloh Baptist Cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Condolences may be extended to the family at www.crockerfuneralhome.com.
