Nansemond River alum Greg Sexton started his fourth season in Tampa Bay’s minor-league organization Thursday night for the double-A Montgomery Biscuits.

Montgomery lost to the visiting Mobile Bay Bears (Arizona) 3-2 in 10 innings on opening night in the Southern League.

Sexton started at third base and hit third for the Biscuits, but went 0-for-4 at the plate.

Sexton graduated from Nansemond River in 2003. Collegiately, Sexton was an All-American third baseman/shortstop at William and Mary. Sexton holds the Tribe program records for career batting average, hits, doubles and games played. Tampa Bay drafted Sexton in the 10th round of the 2007 draft.

Last season, Sexton’s season with the Charlotte (Fla.) Stone Crabs in the advanced single-A Florida State League was cut short by injury. Sexton hit .244 with three homers and 37 RBI in 67 games.

In 2008, for at Columbus in the South Atlantic League (single-A), Sexton hit .294 with 32 doubles, seven homers and 87 RBI.

Montgomery is hosting Mobile for a five-game series, through Monday, to start the season. The Biscuits go on a 10-game road trip starting Wednesday at Carolina (Cincinnati).
