Parents who just cannot get their children to stop singing have a solution coming up in June.

The Virginia Children’s Chorus, based in Norfolk, is holding auditions for new students June 7, 8 and 12 and Aug. 28, 30 and 31. Boys and girls in grades 1 through 12, at all experience levels, are encouraged to audition.

The upcoming season will be the 19th for the Virginia Children’s Chorus, which currently includes about 120 young people in four choirs. Each child receives professional instruction in concert preparation, healthy vocal technique, sight-reading and more, executive director Grace Parkinson said.

“Essentially, we’re here to teach kids to sing like kids,” Parkinson said.

Children in the chorus learn a variety of classical, gospel and folk songs, and perform a number of concerts during the year. Older children also perform two to three times each year with the Virginia Symphony, Parkinson said.

“Everybody gets a certain amount of concert,” she said.

The auditions will be held at Talbot Park Baptist Church, 6919 Granby St., Norfolk, and must be scheduled in advance by calling 440-9100. Students will audition one-on-one with the artistic director, Parkinson said.

There are different audition requirements for different age groups. For more information, visit www.vachildrenschorus.com.
