NORFOLK — Bobby Dickerson was named interim manager of the Norfolk Tides, the Baltimore Orioles announced Friday following the firing of Oriole manager Dave Trembley. Dickerson replaces Gary Allenson, who was named Baltimore’s interim third base coach.
Juan Samuel was named interim manager for Baltimore, which has started the season 15-39 and is 21 games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East. Samuel is in his fourth season in the Oriole coaching staff. Samuel had a 16-year career in the majors as a player, ending in 1998. Samuel, primarily as a second baseman, was a 3-time All-Star. Samuel played for seven teams and was voted onto the Philadelphia Phillies’ Wall of Fame in 2008.
Dickerson, 44, had been the Orioles Minor League Infield Coordinator/Latin America Field Coordinator this season. He has a career record of 525-462 as a minor league manager, with his most recent stint a 72-72 campaign for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs in 2009.
As a player, Dickerson was drafted in the 23rd round of the 1987 amateur draft by the New York Yankees and played seven seasons in the minor leagues with the Yankees and Orioles.
Allenson was 228-254 in three-plus seasons as Norfolk’s manager. He has previously worked on the major league coaching staffs of Milwaukee (2000-02) and Boston (1992-94).
