SUFFOLK — Claudia Holmes Durham Holderfield, 89, passed away June 14, 2010 at Nansemond Pointe Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Suffolk. She was the daughter of the late Wade Hampton and Nellie Durham. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas D. Holderfield; sisters, Emma D. Keefe, Mary E. Heinz, Buelah D. Reba. She was also predeceased by her first husband, Waits Walton Gordon.
Born in Norfolk, Va., she worked for the city of Norfolk as a data processing supervisor. She was a member of Oakland Christian Church, where she was very active for 32 years and sang in the choir. She was a member of Altrusa Club of Norfolk, and was a former member of Lafayette Presbyterian Church in Norfolk. She was a 1938 graduate of Maury High School.
Survivors include her daughters, Rebecca H. Anderson and husband, Dr. Robert Anderson, of Suffolk, Marjorie G. Van Horn and husband, Laurence, of Greensboro, N.C.; son, Waits Walton Gordon Jr. and wife, Laura, of Morganton, N.C.; sister, Laura D. Smith, of Norfolk; sister-in-law, Ann Q. Holderfield, of Portsmouth; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Oakland Christian Church by the Rev. Mark Burns with a private family burial following the service. A visitation and reception will immediately follow the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice. R.W. Baker & Co.
