Next week, thousands of Suffolk residents will be rolling their trashcans to the curb on a different day.

Numerous changes are being made to accommodate a new four-day workweek for trash collectors. The shorter workweek will help the city save an estimated $210,000. Monday is being eliminated as a trash collection day because holidays most frequently fall on that day and it would result in operational costs from buildings being shut down three days in a row, Public Works Director Eric Nielsen said at a City Council meeting in April.

The new policy also results in fewer trips to the landfill and less overtime, because employees will not have to work on a Saturday when there is a Monday holiday.

Several manual routes — about 1,800 customers — also will be converted to automated, which will save more time and money and be more convenient for residents.

Residents were notified of the changes throughout the last couple of weeks through packages on their doorsteps, signs at neighborhood entrances and stickers on their trash cans. Changes take effect next week, with no trash pickup on Monday and new routes beginning Tuesday.
