Police have arrested a third suspect in a failed robbery attempt on June 15.
The 12-year-old was arrested this week and is being held in Tidewater Juvenile Detention Home in Chesapeake. His two accomplices, ages 13 and 14, were arrested immediately following the aborted robbery.
According to a city press release, the failed robbery attempt occurred about 9 p.m. June 15 in a bank parking lot in the downtown area. A woman pulled into the parking lot and became alarmed when she saw three males ducking down near some bushes. All three were wearing bandanas.
The woman notified police and gave them a description of the suspects. After a foot pursuit, officers captured two of the three boys, and also found a bandana and a 9 mm handgun. The two boys told police they planned to rob the woman once she exited her vehicle.
A handgun found outside a North Main Street church two days later was believed to be connected to the robbery, police said. A 3-year-old found the gun in some ivy outside the church, but dropped it when a teacher saw her. The teacher then notified police.
