A tractor-trailer wreck Wednesday snarled traffic on U.S. Route 58 westbound throughout the morning and sent the driver to the hospital.

The vehicle, driven by Henry C. Henning Jr., of Chesapeake, left the roadway to the right about 6:51 a.m. between the downtown and Wilroy Road exits. It struck a tree before catching fire, city spokeswoman Debbie George said. The driver was treated for minor injuries at Sentara Obici Hospital.

The trailer was empty, George said. The trailer carried a Ready Trucking, Inc. logo on its side. The company is located in Petersburg, according to its website.

The right lane was closed for about four hours, with intermittent closures of the entire road to allow the truck to be pulled from the woods. All lanes were reopened by 12:30 p.m.

The accident remains under investigation by Suffolk police. George said Chesapeake police also are investigating to determine whether the driver may have struck a guardrail prior to crossing the city line into Suffolk.
