The owner of a home in the 300 block of Spruce Street was displaced by a fire that severely damaged the two-story home at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Suffolk firefighters brought the fire under control about a half hour after arriving on the scene, according to a city spokesperson.

The owner was not at home at the time of the fire, but neighbors in apartments located adjacent to the residence had to be evacuated for their safety, Suffolk spokesperson Debbie George said.

There were no injuries, and firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to other structures. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
