Donors open wallets for Chuckatuck race

Among 16 candidates for next week’s local elections, M. Caroline Martin has raked in the most contributions for her bid for Chuckatuck’s open City Council seat.

Martin received $7,600 from 30 donors Oct. 1-20, the most recent campaign finance reporting period. In all, individuals and political action committees have poured nearly $20,000 into her campaign.

Martin is also the only candidate who has paid a political consultant this period. Craig K. Bieber, a Richmond-based consultant, received $1,750 from Martin for political consulting services.

Martin’s opponent has used only his own money to finance his campaign. Mike Duman, like many other candidates for local races, loaned himself money for his expenses. Unlike most others, however, he took no money from other sources.

In the Cypress race for City Council, incumbent Charles Brown received a total of $600 from local individuals and businesses this period. He has loaned himself $2,000 for the election.

He spent more than $830 on campaign materials, fliers, printing and mailing services. His opponent, William Newsome, had not filed a report as of Tuesday afternoon. Monday was the state-mandated deadline to file campaign-finance reports.

Holy Neck incumbent Jeffrey Gardy is working off a $5,000 self-loan to his campaign. He received $895 in un-itemized donations during this period. Candidates are not required to report the origins of donations of less than $100.

Gardy’s challenger, Jennings “J.B.” Varney, also is depending largely on loans from himself and BB&T to finance his campaign. He also received $300 from donors this period.

Suffolk borough incumbent Charles Parr received $250 from the Hampton Roads Realtors Political Action Committee, as well as $1,450 in un-itemized contributions. He has received $4,900 this election period.

His challenger, Alvin Copeland, has about $330 cash on hand. He did not receive or spend any money since the last reporting period, for the month of September.

School Board

In School Board races, Suffolk borough challenger Deborah Wahlstrom is leading the way in fundraising. This period, she received $450 from donors. This election, she has amassed nearly $3,200 in donations.

Her opponent, incumbent Michael Debranski, received no donations this period. He has taken in $2,176.52 this election.

For the open Chuckatuck seat, Linda Bouchard has received about $1,075 in donations. Her opponent, Dorothy Bland Gamble, has more than doubled that, raising $2,363 this election.

There’s not much action in the Cypress or Holy Neck School Board races.

Lorraine Skeeter, the incumbent in Cypress, has about $544 cash on hand. She did not spend or receive any money this period.

Her challenger, William Goodman, received only $160 this reporting period. He has loaned himself $600, and has a grand total of $2,115 in receipts this election.

Neither Holy Neck candidate received any itemized donations this period. Incumbent Enoch Copeland received $850 in un-itemized contributions this period. William Owen received $99 in un-itemized contributions this period.
