Suffolk prepares for Election Day

Published 6:40 pm Saturday, October 30, 2010

Election Day is just around the corner again, and Suffolk voters will go to the polls Tuesday to vote for City Council and School Board members, as well as send a congressional representative to Capitol Hill and give their opinion on constitutional amendments.

Sixteen candidates are vying for open seats on both local bodies in four boroughs: Chuckatuck, Cypress, Holy Neck and Suffolk.

In Virginia’s 4th Congressional District, incumbent Randy Forbes, a Republican, is being challenged by Wynne LeGrow, the Democratic nominee.

And voters will cast “yes” or “no” votes on state constitutional amendments having to do with tax relief and the state’s rainy-day fund.

The polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Only registered voters who have not voted by absentee ballot will be permitted to cast a ballot on Election Day.

If you don’t know what precinct you live in or are not sure if you’re registered to vote, visit the State Board of Elections website at www.sbe.virginia.gov. You can also call the Suffolk voter registrar’s office at 514-7750, but remember staffers there will likely be very busy on Election Day.

A list of polling places, by precinct, follows. Residents of the White Marsh precinct, who formerly voted at East Suffolk Community Center, should remember their polling place has changed since the last election. It now is at the East Suffolk Recreation Center, located next door to their former polling place.

The recreation center will be closed to its normal activities for the day to allow for an easier voting process. Because many public schools are used as polling places, Suffolk Public Schools students also have the day off.
