Suffolk announced its newest assistant city attorney last week.

Minna Sankaran Sandwich

Minna Sankaran Sandwich started work with the city Nov. 16. She takes the place of William E. Hutchings Jr., who was recently promoted to deputy city attorney after the departure of Helivi Holland, who took an appointment in the state Department of Juvenile Justice.

“Minna Sandwich brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the city attorney’s office,” City Attorney Edward Roettger Jr. said in a press release. “She will become an important member of our team, and her professional demeanor and commitment to the law and to Suffolk will service city government well.”

Prior to her new position, Sandwich was an assistant commonwealth’s attorney for the city of Chesapeake, where she prosecuted felony and misdemeanor crimes that originated in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. She has also done work as a legal aid attorney and public defender.

She earned her law degree from the University of Richmond School of Law, and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in environmental science and police from Duke University.

Sandwich was raised in Suffolk, and she and her husband currently reside here.
