The Holland Razorbacks finished a perfect season and playoffs with a 14-0 victory over the Franklin Mustangs last week for Holland’s first Franklin-Southampton Youth Football League championship in 16 years.
“We started practice back on Aug. 1 and it’s just been all about the guys working really hard,” said Holland head coach David Bryant.
The Franklin-Southampton Football League isn’t affiliated with Pop Warner Football. The league’s for players ages 9-13. Unlike leagues with weight limits, the only weight limit in this league is no player weighing more than 120 pounds can carry the ball.
“It’s a good league,” said Bryant, who said some kids can grow, literally, out of Pop Warner at too early an age and wind up with no league while they’re still too young for a school’s junior varsity program.
“Any sport or any league that helps keep kids off the street, teaches them right from wrong, that teaches discipline, it’s a good league,” Bryant said.
Bryant’s coached the Razorbacks for four years and was a Razorback himself “about 25 or so” years ago.
“Franklin is a tough team. They always have a good team. My guys worked really hard and played their hearts out. A coach couldn’t ask for any more,” Bryant said.
Only one opponent scored against Holland throughout the regular season and postseason. The two-touchdown margin in the final was as close as any team got to the Razorbacks.
Shuan Faulk rushed 18 times for 193 yards and both touchdowns, one in the second quarter and one in the fourth quarter, for Holland in the final.
“Even back in August, when it was so hot every day, the guys were out there and ready to go,” Bryant said.
