Eugene Wilbert Scott

Eugene Wilbert Scott, affectionately known as “Scottie,” was born in Ponce de Leon Springs, Fla., on July 27, 1936 to the late Sophie Lee Johnson and Lucius Scott. He passed away on Thursday, Nov. 25, 2010 at his home in Ovledo, Fla. Scottie was raised in Suffolk, Va., where he was surrounded by many loving family members including his maternal grandmother, the late Idora Johnson, and Aunt Pearlie Mae Randall, who lovingly referred to him as “Baby Gene.”

The eldest of five, Scottie graduated from East Suffolk High School with the class of 1956 after receiving many accolades for his outstanding performance in baseball and football. He joined the U.S. Army in 1956 and served active duty until 1958, followed by an assignment with the Army Reserve receiving an honorable discharge in 1962. After leaving the service, he attended college in New York while working full-time at the post office from 1967 through 1969.

On Dec. 19, 1964, Scottie wed Esther Marie Terry. To this union was born Teri Annette Scott. They lived in Brooklyn, the Bronx and Roosevelt, N.Y., before moving to Ovledo, Fla., in 1991. Upon moving to Florida, Scottie united with Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and served on the usher board and with the Brotherhood Ministry.

Scottie was retired from the New York City Transit Authority in 1991 with more than 20 years of civil service. He received a number of awards for excellence in service, including receiving an award for rescuing a co-worker. He then worked for the Seminole County Board of Education as a bus driver, from which he retired a second time after 10 years.

Loving memories will be cherished by a family he loved, including his wife, Esther Marie Scott; daughter, Teri A. Scott, of Atlanta, Ga.; stepfather, Frank Kahan Sr., of Suffolk; four brothers, Frank Kahan Jr. (Gwen), of Accokeek, Md., Vernell Kahan (Denise), of Suffolk, Connell Kahan (Karen), of Chesapeake, and Reginald Kahan (Cecilia), of Suffolk; a brother-in-law, Charles Terry (Alice), of Coatesville, Pa.; goddaughter, Tanya Darlington, of New York, N.Y.; godson, Lavar Davis, of Inwood, N.Y.; a special cousin, Albert (Billy) Brown Jr. (Jean), of Ontario, Canada; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends.

Viewing and visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, at the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 311 E. Broadway St., Oviedo, Fla. A homegoing celebration will be held on Saturday, Dec. 4, at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Arrangements will be provided by Golden’s Funeral Home, Inc., 210 N.
