Fire crews put out Garfield Avenue blaze

Suffolk Fire and Rescue responded to a late-night fire on Garfield Avenue on Wednesday.

Firefighters arrived in the 900 block of Garfield Avenue just before midnight to find a two-story residence that was heavily engulfed in flames. The crew brought the blaze under control in about 25 minutes.

The home’s lone occupant escaped prior to firefighters’ arrival and was taken to Sentara Obici Hospital for evaluation. He was released from the hospital a short time later.

The home and contents received about $12,500 in damages.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Suffolk Fire Marshal’s office.
