Recycling: An employee of TFC Recycling sorts through recyclable trash that has been hauled to the company’s Chesapeake location. The company has renewed its push to entice customers from Suffolk to sign up for a $12-a-month recycling service. So far, about 1,500 people have done so, company officials said.

TFC Recycling marks the one-year anniversary of the kickoff to its Suffolk recycling campaign this week with an increased push for residents to sign up.

“We’re just getting ready to kick off a promotion called ‘Resolve to Recycle,’” TFC vice president of business development Ed Farmer said. “The ads will come out starting this week.”

Last January, TFC began accepting sign-ups from Suffolk residents interested in curbside recycling. Throughout the first half of the year, the Chesapeake-based company encouraged people to express their interest in the service by marketing via newspapers, television, door hangers and other media.

The service, which allows residents to dump a wide variety of recyclable materials in their blue bins and have it picked up every other week, began in July with about 1,000 participants. The service costs $12 per month.

Since then, about 500 more people have joined the program, Farmer said.

“We’re still getting new people consistently,” he said. “We’ll get about eight to 10 people a week calling to sign up. We just want to try to get another big push out there.”

Those who sign up for the service will receive a 95-gallon blue bin into which they can toss a variety of materials including newspaper, office paper, glass, Nos. 1 and 2 plastic bottles, aluminum and steel cans, and more.

“We’ve got a commercial that’s going to be kicking off this weekend,” Farmer said. The company is considering ads on social networking sites and other methods to get people interested.

“We want to make sure they’re doing the right thing,” Farmer said, “not only for our generation, but for future generations.”

The new publicity campaign also includes some special offers, Farmer said. Throughout January, new customers who sign up and pay for an entire year at once will receive one free month of recycling. Those who refer friends and neighbors also will get a free month.
