Fire: An early Saturday morning blaze destroyed the house on the right and also caused damage to the house on the left. Eight people, including six children, were assisted by the Suffolk chapter of the American Red Cross.

Six children and two adults were displaced when two homes on Chestnut Street caught fire early Saturday morning.

The blaze, which was reported at 4:30 a.m., completely destroyed a two-story house near the Market Street intersection. The home was already fully engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived from the nearby fire station.

The fire jumped to the home next door before being brought under control.

All the occupants of the two-story home, which contained two apartments, and the adjacent home escaped without injury. They are being aided by the Suffolk chapter of the American Red Cross.

Saturday afternoon, crews were still on scene waiting for Virginia Natural Gas to secure the gas line into the home before the fire marshal’s office could begin its investigation into the cause of the fire.
