Chowan junior and former Nansemond River standout Mark Brown passes during CU’s 63-56 win over visiting Virginia State in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association contest Saturday in Murfreesboro, N.C.

Mount Olive sophomore Andrea Jones (Nansemond River) poured in a team-high 24 points to lead the Lady Trojans in an 81-61 road win over Converse Saturday in Spartanburg, S.C.

Jones tallied her points in only 28 minutes of action. She added five steals and three assists. Mount Olive improved to 13-6 overall and 10-3 in Conference Carolinas with seven regular season games to play.

Also on Saturday, Winthrop’s men’s basketball squad won at Big South foe UNC-Asheville 57-53.

Andrea’s older brother, junior guard Andre Jones (Nansemond River), totaled 11 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists for Winthrop (11-12, 7-6).

With three weeks to go before the Big South Tournament, Winthrop continues its slate hosting Charleston Southern Thursday night.

Chowan’s won back-to-back men’s basketball games for the first time this season. The Hawks beat visiting Virginia State 63-56 on Saturday.

Sophomore forward Quinton McDuffie (Nansemond River) had 12 points and nine rebounds. Junior wing Mark Brown (Nansemond River) added four points.

Chowan (3-17, 2-10 CIAA) hosts Bowie State Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
