Lakeland wins relay, hurdle titles

Lakeland freshmen Alexis Albright, right, and Jamee Albright finished fifth and sixth, respectively, 0.34 seconds apart, in the 1,600 meter run in the Southeastern District Championships in Hampton Wednesday. The Albrights made up half of Lakeland’s victorious 4x800 meter relay team with Shakiella Daniels and Kelsey Smither.

Lakeland claimed one relay and one individual district championship in the Southeastern District Indoor Track and Field Championships at Hampton’s Boo Williams Sportsplex Wednesday.

The Lady Cavaliers won the district title in the 4×800 meter relay with a team of seniors Shakiella Daniels and Kelsey Smither and freshmen Jamee Albright and Alexis Albright. Lakeland finished in 10:27.30, a bit more than two seconds ahead of Hickory.

Lakeland senior JaQuan Demiel placed second in the preliminary heat of the 55 meter hurdles but won the district title in a relative blowout in the final, besting the rest of field by 0.24 seconds in a time of 7.55. Demiel won over Western Branch hurdlers finishing in places two through six.

King’s Fork’s girls team finished highest in the team standings among the six Suffolk squads, finishing fourth overall.

The Lady Bulldogs were led individually by Qualitra Brown finishing second in the 500 (1:17.48) and third in the 300 (41.26). Melinda Hickman finished fifth in the 1,000 (3:14.76).

King’s Fork’s 4×200 relay team of Brown, Alana Glover, Roneka Spady and Gabrielle Snipes finished second.

Western Branch won both district team championships.
