ISLE OF WIGHT—Isle of Wight Academy’s Chelsea Edwards surpassed 1,000 points in her high school career during IWA’s 32-23 win over visiting Atlantic Shores Saturday evening.

The 5-foot-4 senior guard needed six points to reach the milestone and her 1,000th point came with a lay-up in the first quarter.

Edwards began playing varsity ball for IWA as a freshmen, when she scored 109 points, or 4.7 per game. During her sophomore year, she scored 284 points, or 11.8 per game. An ankle injury during her junior year resulted in Edwards missing more than half the season, when she scored 179 points, or 11 per game.

As a senior, she has scored 439 points, for an average of 20 per game.

Edwards scored 16 points in the Metro Conference victory and junior Ally VanCampen added seven points plus 14 rebounds.

The Lady Chargers led 15-1 at the end of the first quarter and 25-9 at the half. Atlantic Shores outscored IWA 14-7 in the second half.

“We had a hard time scoring in the second half,” said Lady Charger Coach Chris Hooper.

“It was the fourth game of the week,” Hooper said. “We still had a number of girls fighting the flu and one starter was playing with strep throat.”

In action from Friday, IWA defeated Alliance Christian 42-26 in another conference game. Edwards netted 20 points and VanCampen added 16 points and10 rebounds.

The Lady Chargers are 12-10 overall and 5-7 in the conference. The Metro Conference Tournament is set to start Wednesday, Feb. 24.
