KF alum earns academic honor at Towson

Towson freshman Derek Wright (King’s Fork) earned the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Commissioner’s Academic Award for having a 3.55 GPA during his first semester at Towson and on the Tiger football team.

Wright is a linebacker for the Tigers and a business economics major.

Former Nansemond River pitcher Reid Hoffler made his mound debut as a Virginia Wesleyan freshman in the Marlins’ 8-1 win over nationally-ranked (NCAA Div. III) Salisbury Wednesday in Virginia Beach.

Hoffler blanked Salisbury for two innings out of the bullpen, giving up one hit while striking out three. The Marlins improved to 3-0 with the win. VWC is in Demorest, Ga. for a three-day tournament this weekend.

Lakeland brothers and battery mates catcher Jarrett Hagwood and pitcher Jeremy Hagwood are also on the Marlin squad.

South Carolina State stopped a losing skid in MEAC women’s basketball play with a 60-57 win over visiting Morgan State Monday evening.

Sophomore guard Trinese Fox (Nansemond River) contributed seven points and six rebounds for SCSU. Fox is averaging 6.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.

The Lady Bulldogs (7-15, 3-9) host North Carolina A&T Saturday.
