Police charge N.C. man with video store robbery

Suffolk police have charged a North Carolina man with the Monday robbery of a local video store.

Leon Michael Engelhardt, 28, is charged with robbery, grand larceny and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

According to city spokeswoman Debbie George, a man entered the House of Video in the 1500 block of Holland Road around 10 p.m. Monday. He implied to the store clerk that he had a gun and demanded money from the register. He took several hundred dollars before fleeing the store.

No one was injured during the incident, George said.

Gary Myrick, an off-duty detective, spotted a possible suspect vehicle a short distance from the store. The vehicle was stopped, and Engelhardt was a passenger in the stopped vehicle.

Engelhardt currently is being held in Western Tidewater Regional Jail with no bond.
