A man leaped from a second-story window to escape a fire at his home on East Washington Street early Saturday morning.

He was taken to the hospital to be treated for burns, while two other people escaped the home safely. Firefighters noticed the flames on their way to a different call, city spokeswoman Debbie George said in a press release.

The fire and rescue personnel were on their way to a medical call when they saw fire in the rear of the house in the 1100 block of East Washington Street. The ambulance continued on to the medical call, while the fire engine stopped and immediately began to battle the flames.

The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes, George said. The house sustained about $55,000 in damage.

The home’s occupants are being aided by the Suffolk chapter of the American Red Cross. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
