Virginia Mae Adams was called from labor to reward on April 13, 2011 at Sentara Obici Hospital. Mrs. Adams was born in Bergen, N.J., on March 5, 1929. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Nicholas Sebrell; brother, Willie N. Howard; and daughter, Sylvia M. Young.

She was employed with Planters (Kraft Food) for over 42 years and retired in 1992. She also was employed with Home Beneficial for several years. Mrs. Adams was a faithful member of Sixth Street Baptist Church for more than 60 years. She was in the following ministries: church treasurer, treasurer, trustee board, senior choir, original church greeter, East Bound Association, Hollywood Jericho Civic League (assistant secretary) and kitchen ministry. She was one of the original coordinators of the herring fish/cornbread and potato breakfast at the church.

She leaves to cherish her memory: a daughter, Barbara A. Cross; devoted granddaughters, Stephanie Smith (Anthony), Yolanda Goodman, Cassandra Jackson and Debbie Howard; grandsons, Leroy Goodman Jr. (Celia), Bobbie Goodman and Charles Young (Lisa); 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; her beloved best friends, Ethel D. Eley and Belinda Evans; devoted caregiver, Della Holland; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, April 18, 2011 at Sixth Street Baptist Church officiated by Dr. James B. Williams. Interment will be in Nansemond-Suffolk Cemetery. A wake will be held Sunday, April 17 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Crocker Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Condolences may be extended to the family at www.crockerfuneralhome.com.
