Humane Society, Animal Control to hold Easter adopt-a-thon

The Suffolk Humane Society and Suffolk Animal Control will hold an Eggscellent Easter Adopt-a-thon at the Chesapeake Square PetSmart on Sunday, April 24.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the store at 4300 Portsmouth Blvd.

The Suffolk Humane Society originally planned to hold the event at the new College Drive PetSmart, but conflicting events prevented it, director of community outreach Kay Hurley said.

Even though it did not work out this time, she said Suffolk Humane hopes to hold events at both of the PetSmart stores from now on.

Hurley said having two locations at which to feature adoptable pets is a great thing for the Suffolk Humane Society.

“With more locations where we can have animals for adoption, we’re hoping we can create more awareness for them and the need,” she said. “It helps us, but most of all it helps the animals.”

Hurley said the adoption events are critical to the humane society’s goal.

“It’s a large part of our mission to help animals get new homes,” she said.

The number of cats and dogs at these events varies and will depend on how many people volunteer to help. Hurley said every dog needs one volunteer with it because dogs require more attention than cats.

There will be dogs and cats at the adopt-a-thon from Suffolk Animal Control, in addition to Suffolk Humane Society cats that live at the Chesapeake Square PetSmart while they await adoption.

The adoption fee for Animal Control adoptions is $60 for cats and $75 for dogs. It is $85 to adopt a cat from the PetSmart adoption.

The fees include spaying and neutering as well as some shots. Hurley said the higher fee for PetSmart cats covers additional medical tests.

The College Drive PetSmart also features Suffolk Humane cats available for adoption seven days a week.

There will be an additional adoption event at the Chesapeake Square PetSmart on Sunday, May 1.
