Fire and Life Safety Camp returns

Students in the Fire and Life Safety Camp get to learn how to use a fire hose and escape from a burning house, among other things. The camp, for ages 7 to 10, will be held in four different sessions this summer.

Looking for something fun and educational to entertain your children this summer? Back by popular demand is the Suffolk Fire & Rescue Fire and Life Safety Camp. Registration is currently underway for kids ages 7 to 10. Exciting camp activities include: a ride on a fire truck, using a real fire hose, experiencing the Fire Safety House and home evacuation drills, water safety lessons, hands-on first aid training, natural disaster awareness, seeing a Suffolk Police drug-detection dog in action, tackling a 55-foot obstacle course and more.

The Fire and Life Safety Camp is designed to be fun and challenging. Campers will also learn safety lessons about hazards encountered everyday around their homes and schools. They will experience firsthand what it’s like to be a firefighter with the Suffolk Department of Fire and Rescue while building a sense of teamwork and responsibility. Short periods of lectures and lessons followed by exercises will reinforce lessons learned. Additional lessons and activities will center on fire and life safety issues, branching out to basic first aid, water safety, bike safety, search and rescue and many other interesting topics. Leadership principles are taught to each child directly and indirectly. Many of the activities planned correlate with requirements for several Boy and Girl Scout patches.

This year’s camp will have a choice of four sessions, with the cost at $65.00 per session for each child. The cost includes a healthy lunch and snack each day, as well as materials to enhance the life safety messages learned during the camp, a graduation reception and a camp T-shirt.
