A Suffolk mother has been set free on a $7,500 bond after her weekend arrest on charges of child cruelty.

Keona Monique Lawrence, 29, of S. Capital Street, was charged with three counts of cruelty and injury to a child following an April 19 incident, Suffolk spokeswoman Debbie George said on Monday. Lawrence was arrested on Sunday.

According to George, a Child Protective Services worker went to Lawrence’s home on April 19 to deliver some paperwork. Upon arriving, she found that Lawrence was gone, but three children — ages 2, 3 and 6 — were home alone.

George said the Child Protective Services worker was at the home for 15 minutes before Lawrence showed up, so the children were alone for at least that long.

“(The mother) said she’d gone up the street to get a cigarette,” George said.

After Lawrence was arrested, a magistrate released her on bond. George was unable to say what had happened to the children.
