Survivors make the first lap of last year’s Relay for Life. The event moves to a new location this year. It begins tomorrow at 6 p.m.

It’s a new year, at a new location, with many new participants. The 2011 Suffolk Rockin’ Relay for Life begins tomorrow at 6 p.m.

Already, the event has shattered records. It has 69 teams registered — nine more than last year — and has raised $146,314 toward its $202,250 goal. Compared to last year’s 706 participants, this year’s total of 1,088 so far is astronomical.

The Relay will be held at Bennett’s Creek Park from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday. Survivor and team registration begins at 5 p.m.

Entertainment throughout the event will include the James River Jazz Band, Island Boy, Reform School Dropouts and a disc jockey. Food vendors, children’s activities and other events will take place off the track, as well as a number of health screenings such as blood pressure and glucose. Massages also will be offered.

On the track, the classic survivors’ lap and luminaria ceremony are on the schedule, as well as new laps like a limbo contest lap and backwards lap.

It’s not too late to get involved, donate money or simply show up and offer support for the walkers. For more information, visit www.suffolkrockinrelay.org.
