ISLE OF WIGHT — The Lady Chargers finished the Metro Conference Tournament like they finished the regular season.
They beat Broadwater Academy to clinch first place.
Isle of Wight Academy scored 10 runs on 13 hits against the Lady Vikings to clinch the championship game of the Metro Conference Tournament.
Lady Chargers coach and Metro Conference Coach of the Year Chris Hooper said his team played well on both sides of the ball to claim the win.
“I’m very happy with what they did today,” Hooper said.
Hailey Glover pitched six innings, gave up six hits and two earned runs to pick up the win. The sophomore pitched well, retiring the sides in order in the second, third and fourth innings.
Glover went 3-for-4 with an double and an RBI single.
Dianne Davis went 3-for-3 at the plate hitting two triples and a double. She also had an RBI and walked twice.
Bailey Key went 2-for-3 with two walks and three RBIs. She also scored a run.
Broadwater opened the scoring in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead before the Lady Chargers’ bats came alive in a two-out rally in the bottom of the first.
After Lindsey Coble reached base on an error, Davis hit a triple in the next at bat to score her. In the next at bat, Key hit a double, but an error on the play allowed her to cross the plate, putting IWA up 3-1 at the end of the first.
Sarah Bower hit a single with one out in the second inning. She was later stranded at third as Broadwater recorded two more outs.
A single by Taylor Chaffer and an error allowed two runs to cross the plate with one out in the third.
Kenzie Conner reached base on an error in the fourth before Coble scored her with an RBI double. Coble later scored on a single by Glover. Chaffer would draw a bases-loaded walk during the next at bat to Davis and give IWA a 7-1 advantage.
Broadwater would muster two runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Coble hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the inning and would come around to score after the next at bat — a double by Davis. Davis scored on an error and Key scored on double by Glover after reaching first base on an error.
IWA’s Shelby Jurewicz came in to close out the game in the top of seventh inning, while Glover moved to first base.
IWA will take on Fuqua School in the first round of the state tournament at 4 p.m. Tuesday at William M. Hooper Field in Isle of Wight.
