Shake, Rattle and Roll at car show

If you choose downtown Suffolk this weekend, get ready to shake, rattle and roll at the annual car show.
The event honors the racers, records and fans of the quarter-mile concrete track at the Suffolk Airport. It includes exhibits from the former raceway in a Bill Gwyn Tribute Tent, special guest Brian Hankins and live music by FAB.
The show has been “Jack Approved” by Jack Redd, a renowned drag-racing news columnist. The very first “Jack Approved” drag meet took place at the Suffolk Raceway in 1967 under the ownership of Hank Hankins.
The car show begins at 8 a.m. in downtown Suffolk, with awards presented at 2 p.m. on the event stage at Main and Market Streets. Children can try pedal-car racing down Main Street or a hula-hoop contest on the event stage.
Main Street restaurants and other food vendors will be offering specials and sales throughout the day.
Main Street between Washington Street and Finney Avenue will be closed to through traffic from 6 a.m. through late afternoon. One block each of Market and Bank streets adjacent to Main Street also will be closed. The event will conclude at 3 p.m.
