Police seek man in shooting

Suffolk police are seeking a man wanted for an attempted armed robbery that ended in a shooting early Sunday.

Warrants are on file for Rasheem Akeem “Rock” White, 24, of the 100 block of Church Street in Suffolk. Police say he demanded money from a victim in the downtown area and then shot him in the foot when he wouldn’t give up his cash.

According to city spokeswoman Debbie George, the victim was standing on the corner of Wellons Street and Battery Avenue when he was approached by a black male who demanded money. The victim laughed at the suspect. When the suspect attempted to reach into the pocket of the victim, the two men began struggling.

The suspect then fired a gun several times, striking the victim in the foot once, then fled the scene.

A police officer in the area responded after hearing gunshots. The victim was treated at Sentara Obici Hospital.

Warrants out for White include attempted armed robbery, aggravated malicious wounding, shoot, stab, cut or wound and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. An additional warrant for possession of a controlled substance is on file from an unrelated incident.
