Lakeland and King’s Fork will be striving for individual and relay state championships Friday and Saturday at the Virginia High School League, Group AAA State Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Richmond.
Coming off of winning the Eastern Region title in the boys 4×100-meter relay, Lakeland goes into the state meet with the third-best time in Virginia this year. The Cavalier team is Rausheeim Thompson, Quentin Gilchrist, JaQuan Demiel and Anaquan Peterson.
King’s Fork’s boys 4×400 team is ranked No. 2 in the state, but the Bulldogs are second to Southeastern District rival Oscar Smith. The Bulldogs finished runner-up to the Tigers in the district and regional championships.
Individually, Demiel is the defending state champion in both hurdle races. Peterson won the regional triple jump title last weekend. Peterson is tied for the best triple jump mark in the state this season and ranked No. 2 in the long jump.
Lady Bulldog senior Qualitra Brown battled through an injury in the Eastern Region meet but still has the second-fastest 400-meter time in the state this season — the time of 54.89 seconds she ran in winning at the Southeastern District meet. Brown’s also entered in the 100, with the No. 8-seeded time, even though she didn’t run in the 100 in the district or region championships.
