Suffolk police are seeking a suspect in seven larcenies from vehicles or tampering with vehicles that occurred Tuesday morning.

Seventeen warrants are on file for Kempton D. Whitney, 20, of the 100 block of Butler Street in Portsmouth. The array of charges includes grand larceny, petit larceny, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and entering a vehicle. A 16-year-old male also is charged in the incident.

According to city spokeswoman Debbie George, police received a call Tuesday morning informing them that two males had been observed entering vehicles in the Burbage Grant community. The suspects fled prior to police arrival.

A description of the suspect vehicle was broadcast, however, and police stopped the vehicle a short distance from the scene. Two males fled the vehicle on foot, but were not apprehended. Items located in the suspect vehicle had been stolen from cars in the community.

The other suspect’s identity cannot be released because of his age, George said.

According to George, neither of the suspects has been charged in any other recent incidents. About 40 have been reported in the last two weeks.

Anyone who knows Whitney’s whereabouts is asked to call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP. Callers to Crime Line never have to give their names or appear in court, and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
