Vernon Redell Riddick, 64, of Hampton, Va., died Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at the VA Medical Center in Hampton, Va. He was a native of Gates County, N.C. and the son of the late Vernon H. and Dorothy L. Riddick.

He attended the Gates County Public Schools. He served in the U.S. Army. He retired after 27 years at the Newport News Shipyard. Vernon was a member of New Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church and its male chorus.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Virginia Smith Riddick; two daughters, Michelle Riddick and Paula Keyes (Robert Jr.), both of Suffolk; a son, Amos R. Riddick, of Suffolk; a stepson, Adrian Smith (Marion), of Hampton; three grandsons and three granddaughters; three sisters, Maggie Eure, Shirley Batchelor (Connie) and Dorothy Saunders (Anthony), all of Gates; two aunts, Clarine Riddick and Marion Harris, both of Portsmouth; uncle, George Riddick, of Philadelphia, Pa.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 10, 2011, at New Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church, 1109 Drum Hill Road, Gates, N.C., officiated by the Rev. Richard Curry. Interment will be in Rountree Family Cemetery, Gates, N.C. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Crocker Funeral Home, Inc. is handling the arrangements. Clinton Bruce Vann Sr., 87, of 816 Battery Ave., Suffolk, Va., died Monday, July 4, 2011, at his residence. He was a native of Nansemond County and the son of the late William and Rosa Vann. He was predeceased in death by his wife, Jessie Mae Vann.

He retired after 36 years at the Navy Yard (Naval Facilities Engineering Command).

He was survived by four daughters, Rosa White, of Suffolk, Brenda Lee Reid, of District Heights, Md., Vera Angela Jackson, of Locust Grove, Va., and Stephenie Smallwood, of New Britain, Conn.; three sons, Clinton Bruce Vann Jr., Roger Vann and Stephen Vann, all of New Britain, Conn.; one sister, Minerva Vann; 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, July 8, 2011, in the chapel of Crocker Funeral Home officiated by Brother Solomon Darden. Interment will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Cemetery.
