The 12 softball players on the Tidewater Terror have earned a mantel full of trophies to remember this summer by.

The Terror, an all-star team made up of girls from Holland Athletic Association and Windsor Athletic Association, won the 10-and-under 2011 PONY East Zone Championship in Chesapeake on Sunday. It’s the third straight tournament title and makes 15 straight victories, while facing other all-star teams the whole way, for the Terror.

Since the last weekend in June, the Terror’s played in four tournaments. The Terror finished second in the Holland Havoc IV National Qualifier, won the Smithfield Summer Blast, won the Chesapeake Fastpitch Regional Qualifier at Deep Creek and last weekend’s East Zone Championship.

“It’s been mainly a lot of hard work. The kids work really hard and they work well together,” said Terror manager Les Matthews.

“It’s been a pleasure to coach them and they really get along well as a team,” Matthews said.

The Tidewater Terror is Kaylin Manner, Meredith Oliver, Austin Gore, Amiah Murphy, Brittney Strickland, Makayla Dickens, Morgan Stevens, Mackenzie Wooten, Kayce Gray, Kaleigh Beale and Sara Matthews. The coaches along with Matthews are Charlie Wooten, Al Gore and Garry Murphy.

The runner-up finish in the Holland National Qualifier in June is a fine accomplishment by any measure. Instead of being happy with such a result though, the loss in the final to a Smithfield all-star squad spurred the Terror to its three titles.

“After that, the girls just decided they wouldn’t accept losing any more,” Matthews said.

The 15-0 record since includes a couple victories over Smithfield, one in the championship game of the Smithfield Summer Blast and one in early rounds of the tourney at Deep Creek.

“Smithfield’s been our toughest competition all season,” Matthews said. “They made us turn our work up a notch and work really hard.”

For the PONY East Zone title, the Terror beat Ice, a team from Pennsylvania, in the final game 12-4.

The Terror and Ice were tied 1-1 until the Terror broke the game open with a six-run third inning.

“The kids played their best game in the championship game,” Matthews said.

The Tidewater Terror is 21-1 for the season, having outscored opponents 211-52. Pitchers Mackenzie Wooten and Sara Matthews have combined for four no-hitters, four shutouts and 150 strikeouts.

The six best players from the recreation teams at Holland and Windsor were brought together in January, meaning the Terror players have been practicing with their regular-season team and the all-star team for most of the past five months.

“I heard the Pennsylvania team drew its team from around 80 players. Our team is 12 out of 24 kids,” Matthews said.

The zonal championship qualified the Terror for the PONY Mustang (10-and-under) Nationals in Round Rock, Tex. this week. The Terror was unable to go because of a lack of funds.

The PONY season is over, but not the softball season. The Terror is planning on playing in one or two travel softball tourneys within the next couple weeks, so there’s a good chance the Terror might need a little more space for another nice trophy.
