Get tickets for crab pickin’ fix

Anyone fixing to pick some crabs while helping out the community can now pick up tickets for Suffolk 60 Care’s Crab Pickin’ with a Purpose.
The event will take place Sept. 10 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Constant’s Wharf Park.
Tickets are $30 for adults or $12 for children ages 5 to 12. All children under 5 get into the picking for free.
In addition to all the crabs you can eat, the event will also feature a buffet with selections such as fried chicken and mashed potatoes.
Suffolk 60 Care president Jessica Mullen said the crab picking is a laid-back event that families can attend together.
“It’s a lot of fun,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity to meet your neighbors, those that live across the street or across the city.”
For the second year, the group is holding the event to raise money to benefit different non-profit organizations that have an impact in Suffolk.
“This time when money is tight across the board, it also makes money tight for non-profits to do what they’ve done with even less,” Mullen said.
Since the group started in 2005, it has donated about $158,000 to Suffolk organizations, and last year, it awarded money to YMCA, Salvation Army, ForKids Suffolk House, the Up Center and the Genieve Shelter.
Mullen said none of the money raised goes back into Suffolk 60 Care.
“The money that we raise with the fundraisers stays in Suffolk,” she said. “This is a great opportunity to show children to benefit of volunteering and the benefit of giving back to the community in which you live,” she said.
Anyone hoping to attend can purchase tickets from any Suffolk 60 Care member or on the group’s website at www.s60c.org. No tickets will be sold at the door.
