Warriors win Va. Wesleyan camp title

Nansemond River guard Shannon Evans, here during a summer league game at King’s Fork, scored 21 points in the final game of the Blue Marlin Team Camp leading the Warriors to a 40-35 win over Granby and the camp championship.

Nansemond River’s boys basketball team continued its busy summer by winning the 11th Annual Blue Marlin Team Camp last weekend at Virginia Wesleyan.

The Warriors came out on top of 24 schools in the three-day tournament. The camp brought in 16 Eastern Region schools along with visitors ranging from Maryland to Key West, Fla.

NR’s backcourt duo of Shannon Evans and Dontrell Brite combined for 28 points as the Warriors beat Granby 40-35 in overtime in the championship game Sunday afternoon. The Warriors finished 7-2 in the tourney.

Lakeland, the No. 24 seed after pool games determined the bracket part of the event, upset No. 9 Deep Run in the first round to set up a contest against the No. 8-seeded Warriors.

Nansemond River advanced past the Cavaliers then went on to beat Woodside 56-44 in the quarterfinals and First Colonial 52-46 in the semifinals.

In addition to playing in the King’s Fork Summer League through June and July, the Warriors faced elite competition at the Hoop Group Elite Team Camp in Reading, Pa. in July.

Along with the camp being a showcase in front of hundreds of college coaches from all levels, the Warriors went 3-2 in games against St. Anthony’s (N.J.), Bishop O’Connell, Imhotep School (Pa.), The Hill (Pa.) and Hudson Catholic (N.J.).
