The Suffolk News-Herald announces the winners of its annual National Night Out coloring contest.

Because of the record number of entries received — 21 entries by children ages 3 to 13 — News-Herald editorial staff decided to do two age groups, up to 9 years old and 10 and over.

The children were asked to color a depiction of Nat Knight, the National Night Out mascot, holding a trophy. The contest was included in Friday’s and Sunday’s editions the weekend before National Night Out.

The staff chose 11-year-old Jalexus Coston as the first-place winner in the older age category. Jalexus will receive $50 and four Norfolk Tides tickets.

Receiving the second-place prize is 13-year-old Yasmin Aliza’ Knight. Yasmin will receive $25 and four Norfolk Tides tickets.

In the younger age category, staff members picked 8-year-old Christian Alexander Blythe to receive a $20 prize.

“We were pleased with the number of entries this year,” News-Herald editor Res Spears said. “Every one of the 21 entries showed incredible talent, and we are happy to see so many children supporting the cause of National Night Out.”
