Rita’s Italian Ice in Chesapeake Square is hosting a fundraising night to raise money for the H.E.R. Shelter.
On Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m., employees from the H.E.R. Shelter, a non-profit organization that works to provide shelter and other assistance for domestic violence victims, will help serve ice, custard and gelati to customers at Rita’s. The shelter will receive 15 percent of the sales made during that time.
Kelly Holschuh, store owner and manager, said he welcomed the opportunity when the organization approached him about a fundraising event.
“As soon as they came to us, I thought this is exactly the type of fundraising I would like to do,” he said. “I thought it was a really good thing, and I jumped on it.”
Holschuh said this cause is especially close to his heart because he has known women who were abused.
The Rita’s fundraiser is going to help purchase HRT bus tickets for the shelter’s residents in order to provide them with transportation while they are looking for housing, employment and other assistance.
Holschuh said he hopes the event will have a great turnout.
“I have a feeling that this is going to go really, really well,” he said.
Holschuh said he thinks everyone can relate to this issue and realize they can help.
“Somewhere along the line someone see someone else hitting another person,” he said. “The victims don’t ask for it; it just happens to them. Then, they are displaced with children sometimes, and they can use all the help they can get.”
The shop is located at 4105 Chesapeake Square Blvd. #109.
