Nansemond River senior Travis Johnson was the medalist, shooting a one-over par 73 at Nansemond River Golf Club on Monday, as the Warriors completed a perfect 9-0 regular season and won the Southeastern District season championship for the first time in Nansemond River’s time in Group AAA and the Southeastern.

Nansemond River completed an undefeated season and won the Southeastern District season golf championship with a 308-379 win against Indian River at Nansemond River Golf Club Monday.

The district championship is the first for Nansemond River in its 16 years in the Southeastern and Group AAA.

The Warriors have had plenty of individual golfers qualify for regional and state tournaments in recent seasons. The team berth into the Eastern Region Tournament, however, is another program first.

Senior No. 1 golfer Travis Johnson was the medalist on Monday with a one-over par 73 on a hot day around the difficult Nansemond River course. It’s the sixth match Johnson’s been the medalist or co-medalist for the Warriors (9-0).

Griffin Genier shot a 75. Jacob Foster and Bryce Strong each carded 80s to make up the Warrior team total, one of the lowest rounds for the Warriors this season ahead of the start of the postseason. Genier, Strong and Shanice Mason have been medalists as well at least once each during the nine straight district match wins.

The Warriors are already safely set for regionals, but they can sweep the district golf titles as the Southeastern District tournament is scheduled for Sept. 19-20 at Sleepy Hole Golf Course
