Mattie Whitehead Lawrence, 90, of the 9900 block of Southwestern Boulevard, Suffolk, Va., went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 20, 2011. She was born July 22, 1921, in Southampton County to the late Fantroyal and Emma Brown Whitehead. She was a lifelong resident of Nansemond County, where she resided for 69 years with her husband, Robert Lawrence Sr.

Mattie is survived by her children, Helen L. Peterson and Robert Lawrence Jr. (Bessie), of Chesapeake, Va.; adopted daughter, H. Sharmaine Hunter-Boykins, Ph.D (Dwight), of Jacksonville, N.C.; three grandsons, William Peterson (Katrina), of Chesapeake, Va., Brian Peterson (Kimberly), of Greensboro, N.C. and Brandon Lawrence (Lyyorlady), of Millville, N.J.

The family would like to give special thanks to Ms. Queen Powell and Ms. Brenda Lawrence of Personal Touch Home Care Services and the ICU staff at Sentara Obici Hospital for the excellent service provided in the care of Mrs. Mattie Lawrence.

The homegoing services will be held at noon, Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, 6100 Holy Neck Road, Suffolk, officiated by the Rev. William Lang and the Rev. Dr. Joseph Goode. Viewing of the body will take place one hour prior to the life celebration. Interment will be at Mt. Sinai Church Cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
