The angels descended for Amos Tillery Sr. on Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, at Sentara Obici Hospital, surrounded by family. A distinguished and fervent Amos was born on March 28, 1917, to Roberta and Jack Tillery. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Margaret Gambrell and Carole Faye Tillery; five sons, Amos Jr., Thomas Lee, Larry, Donald and Richard Tillery Sr.
He was blessed to have spent 94 years on this earth. He lived for nine decades. He was married at an early age to the late Irene Burnett Tillery. They were married for 50 years until her death. Amos was a father of 14 and a grandfather of 39. He retired from long-distance truck driving after 45 years of traveling all over the country. He was the strong chain that held his family together. Amos lived a wonderful life with his children and grandchildren. He spent quality time traveling with his family and enjoyed having all the attention on him. Amos was well respected by his family and friends.
Amos leaves to cherish his joy-filled life: a devoted caregiver and baby girl, Tonya Tillery, of Suffolk, Joanne Ricks (Johnny), of Suffolk, Irene Jordan (Jimmie), of Baltimore, Md.; sons, Milton Tillery (Kim), of Clementon, N.J., Lovoil Tillery (Rory), of Philadelphia, Pa., Lee Otis (Louise), of Suffolk, Billy Earl Briggs (Mary), of Suffolk; two daughters-in-law, Thomasina Tillery and Rose Tillery, both of Suffolk; one brother, Richard Willis (Shirley), of Suffolk; and one sister, Eunice Willis, of Seaford, Del.; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends. The celebration of life service will be held at New Mount Joy Food for Living Ministry at 307 County St., Suffolk, VA 23434 on Oct. 8, 2011, at 1 p.m., officiated by Bishop Wallace Johnson. Interment will be at Carver Memorial Cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Condolences may be extended to the family at www.crockerfuneralhome.com.
