Minnie Shepherd Rodgers “BeeBee,” a native of Nansemond County, was born Nov 11, 1932. She died Oct. 2, 2011. She was the daughter of the late Walter S. and Mary E. Lawrence Shepherd.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin L. Rodgers Sr.; daughter, Charlene R. Perry; and brother, Walter E. Shepherd.

She accepted Christ at an early age at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Suffolk, Va.

She was a graduate of East Suffolk High School in 1950. She graduated from Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth City, N.C., in 1955. She was a member of the Virginia Education Association. She taught in Nansemond and Isle of Wight counties for 25 years before retiring.

She leaves to mourn two daughters, Avis M. Rodgers, of Chesapeake, Va. and Jeanette R. Leonard (Hayward), of Suffolk, Va.; one son, Alvin L. Rodgers Jr. (Mattie), of Suffolk, Va.; one sister-in-law, Mildred Shepherd, of Baltimore, Md.; son-in-law, Frederick E. Perry, of Virginia Beach, Va.; six grandchildren; one niece and three nephews; and a host of relatives and friends.

The family will be receive friends and family at the home of Jeanette Rodgers Leonard, 317 Festival Court, Suffolk, Va.

The funeral will be held on Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at noon at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Suffolk, Va. Peebles Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
