Deacon Lawrence Leroy Maddrey, 86, of 1056 Centerbrooke Lane, Suffolk, Va., died Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at his residence. He was a native of Portsmouth, Va., and the son of Earnest and Edna Branch Maddrey. He was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Mary Sykes Wiggins; sister, Thelma B. Copeland; and brother, Earnest Maddrey Jr.
He was attended I.C. Norcom High School. He retired from Norfolk Naval Base in Portsmouth. He was a member of New Mt. Joy Food For Living Ministry, where he served on the Male Usher Board, Male Chorus and was the treasurer of the Deacon Board.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Lillian Maddrey; his foster daughter, Jill Ricks Floyd, of Jacksonville, Fla.; two stepsons, Timothy D. Sykes, of Suffolk, and Gregory S. Sykes, of Charlotte, N.C.; two foster sons, Anthony Almond, of Fontana, Calif., and John Almond, of Orange, Calif.; cousins, Theodore Arrington, of Norfolk, Va., Curtis Richards, of Fayetteville, N.C., and Ruby Belvey, of Philadelphia, Pa.; other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held at noon, Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, at New Mt. Joy Food For Living Ministry. Interment will be at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Condolences may be extended to the family at www.crockerfuneralhome.com.
